Random Musings on the Top Chef Premiere

by Lauren Gitlin November 13, 2008 11:52 am
Random Musings on the Top Chef Premiere Number first: What in the bleep was Gail Simmons wearing? No. Do not want.

Onward. I have to rescind my initial thoughts about Gene based on his cheesy-ass troubadour promo because dude is clearly a savant! And props for working your way up from dishwasher to Top Chef contender, too. Him FTW.

I also want to tip my toque to Hosea, whom I thought would suck real bad, mostly because I used to live in Boulder and found the food scene to be lacking. But holmes brought it with his take on Ruskie cuisine, despite his rather sheltered culinary experience.

Others whom I don't yet hate include token lez Jamie and crazy facial-hair having Long Island goomba dude, just because.

Now for the idiots. Most hated so far is Carla, who needs to stop talking about her spirit animal circa now. That shiz does not fly, okay? Secondly, I'd like to express vindication that not one but two of the contestants who are products of the schmancy Culinary Institute of America were the first two booted off, which makes me rethink my backup plan to attend culinary school and become a famous chefular. Take that, classical training! Radhika can also suck an egg, after she was all "I don't want to be pigeon-holed for only cooking Indian" and then proceeded to make a chutney for her first quickfire challenge. Lameness personified.

Obvi it seems we're supposed to dislike Stefan for his self-assured strut, and I'll admit that he's a little brash. But I have a special affinity for all things Finnish (long story but it involves Jim Jarmusch and this post-modern poetry professor I had in college) so I'm gonna try to reserve judgment.

What did you foodies think of the premiere ep? Who do you love? Who do you hate? And can someone please explain Gail's dress to me?
