I'm an Adam Lambert fan. I'm not even going to try and pretend I'm not. I love his voice, his style and think he just seems like a cool person. That said, I'm also hugely into musical theater and like my pop stars to be overly flamboyant. I was raised in a household with a lot of Queen and David Bowie. But even though Adam made it further than I could have hoped, I just think that it won't be enough to pull him through to take the title of American Idol (which really means nothing anyway, but that's a whole 'nother story). If it had been the predicted Lambert/Gokey showdown, I think Adam might have had a chance, but now that wild card Kris Allen is in the mix, I think that Kris has an excellent chance of going home with the title.
I spent quite a bit of time pondering the variables this weekend (probably more than I should have). Kris has the adorable non-threatening vibe that the teenaged David Archuleta fans were so attracted to. Which would mean, judging by last season's finale, that Kris would fall short. But he's not Adam Lambert which could sway a lot of the older generation and the Danny Gokey fans out there. While normally I'd say that the Gokey fans would just not bother voting (which usually is what I do when my favorite contestant gets ousted from these sorts of competitions) the ones I know seem to have a vested interest in making sure that Adam Lambert doesn't win. They hate Glambert almost as much as I can't stand Gokey (we've mostly agreed to disagree). Kris, and his mild-mannered little self can only benefit from this scenario. Which honestly, would be fine. Boring, but fine. Safe, but fine.
He's got that Jason Mraz/John Mayer thing going on (down to the guitar and the oddly contorted singing faces they both specialize in) and that seems to be a very popular genre right now. Which is probably what has garnered him so many votes along the way. Because while my Facebook/Twitter replies are usually filled with "Why do you hate Gokey?" and "I hate Adam and love Danny" comments or vice versa, never once has anyone said to me that Kris is their absolute favorite. So I'm not entirely sure who his loyal fans are, though I think he's had a very solid run up to this point and could easily slide in to win it. It might make Simon Cowell unhappy (since last week he basically told people in no uncertain terms to vote for Adam) but it seems a very distinct possibility that Seacrest will be announcing Kris Allen as the new American Idol. Which, whatever. It's not like I dislike him. He seems like a perfectly nice guy, and has a pleasant enough voice and can play his own instrument, but it just seems like the most dull outcome since Jordin Sparks won out over inventive beatboxing Blake. I didn't really love Blake, but I appreciated him trying to mix things up a little bit, whereas Jordin has a good voice, but she's sort of like every other R&B-esque girl out there now, complete with overused vocoder. And if this is how this all plays out, can someone just wake me up next Spring when season 9 starts? Because I'm sure whatever song that the have written for him (which likely involves dreams and rainbows and the sky) is going to put me into a deep comatose sleep for at least that long.
