Had The Pauly D Project premiered several years ago and not after five arduous seasons of Jersey Shore, I would've been way more excited about the prospect of a Pauly D spin-off -- sure, at the time, his career as a DJ sounded like a total joke, but thanks to his pretty excellent personality, Pauly has long been one of my favorite members of the cast. Unfortunately, I've grown extremely tired of the Shore crew and the fame machine the show has become. Where "Oh yeah!" and "Cabs are here!" used to be fun catchphrases, seeing them emblazoned on every ad on MTV is more tiresome than endearing at this point. And the fact that Pauly is in his 30s now makes his act much less cute.
Assuming you've got a higher Pauly tolerance than me, Project is pretty harmless. Without his housemates (and in the case of Vinny, platonic love) around to steal the spotlight, we definitely get to learn more about Pauly's life with just a little bit less staged drama than Shore offers. He's a legitimate celebrity deejay these days, so the series really captures the Entourage feel of a guy who became famous and takes his friends along for the ride. The crew -- Biggie, Jerry, Ryan and Jason -- are generally unmemorable, though there's no question that these dudes clearly worship Pauly and live the same lifestyle he did back before MTV was sending him a paycheck; bro-ing down, drinking and worrying about generally inconsequential drama. (Speaking of the central conflict in the pilot, I'm still shocked there wasn't a pun about wanting your hair to have a blowout, not your speakers.)
I'm sure Pauly's residency in Vegas will have its moments, and we've learned from Entourage and The Hangover that audiences tend to love watching dudes get laid and party in hotel suites. I'd prefer to see cameras following Sammi around as she desperately tries to get booked for gigs, a Situation rehab series or Single Ronnie just plain being sad, but life-stalkers can't be choosers, I guess.
Since Pauly was once "the other guy" on Jersey Shore, will the other guy on this new show eventually get his own spin-off? Our vloggers despair at the prospect:
