It was yet another nostalgic outing for Saturday Night Live this weekend, as Justin Timberlake gained membership into the "Five Timers Club" for quintuple hosting gigs and the writers celebrated by raiding the show's back catalogue for (vaguely) fresh material. Some of these reunions with old friends were welcome, while others were... well, really kind of cringe-inducing. Here were the best and worst callbacks from an overall uneven episode.
In a reunion three seasons in the making, Jeff Winger finally met his pater familias Willie (played by James Brolin) in Community's Thanksgiving-themed outing "Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations." Due to the heavy nature of this encounter, it's perhaps no surprise that the episode erred on the side of serious rather than seriously funny (not that we've seen much of the latter this season anyway) and, to his credit, Joel McHale rose to the occasion, doing some really terrific work that made up for creative lapses like Jeff's obnoxiously self-esteem challenged step-brother, Willie Jr. (Adam DeVine, who had the misfortune of being saddled with such a poorly conceived character).
After stumbling out of the gate, Season 4 of Community aired what was probably its strongest episode to date last night... although, the fact that "Conventions of Space and Time" qualifies as "strong" tells you how rocky the show's post-Harmon era has been so far.
To make up for the fact that Community's Halloween episode was airing on Valentine's Day as opposed to... well, Halloween, the marketing geniuses decided to give "Paranormal Parentage" the more calendar appropriate Twitter handle: "#HappyValloween." The idea of a Valentine's Day/Halloween hybrid is a pretty funny notion and probably would have made a great episode of Community. Certainly better than the one we got, which after a strong start (thanks largely to daffy costumes worn by the gang -- if Bill Watterson wasn't so tight-assed when it comes to licensing, we'd love a live-action Calvin & Hobbes movie starring Danny Pudi and Donald Glover) began to flatline soon after the gang turned up at Pierce's mansion ostensibly to spring him from his panic room, in which he had accidentally locked himself.
Maroon 5 frontman, The Voice host and American Horror Story murder victim Adam Levine tried his hand at sketch comedy over the weekend as a Saturday Night Live host. How'd he do? Well, let's just say he shouldn't quit his day job anytime soon... whatever that happens to be this week. (At least the writers clearly realized his limitations, writing around him as much as humanly possible.) Despite the night's overall suckitude, there were a few bits that worked. Here are the sketches we would have turned our big red plush chairs around for.
About five minutes in to "Women in Garbage," my fiancé and I were laughing so hard that we had to pause, rewind and turn up the volume -- and this continued throughout. Maybe this episode didn't move the season's plot along very far, but it was consistently funny and made me extremely happy in the way that Parks and Recreation often does. I wouldn't describe it as "epic" the way I would "Two Parties" (and I don't use that term lightly), but I do think it's the kind of episode you can show a non-believer in order to finally convince them to binge-watch Parks & Rec with you from the beginning (actually, I'd recommended starting at the first episode of Season 2, but I digress). Until then, let's do this:
Jennifer Lawrence -- newly minted A-list star of The Hunger Games and current Oscar nominee for Silver Linings Playbook -- made her first appearance in the battle arena known as Saturday Night Live over the weekend. And just like her alter ego, Katniss Everdeen, she didn't get off to the smoothest start, botching her opening monologue (the Best Actress smackdown was a decent idea, but Lawrence seemed too nervous to really execute it) and struggling through the first few (admittedly terribly written) sketches. But around the halfway mark, she found her groove and finished strong with some pretty funny material. Here's a rundown on Lawrence's losers and winners:
Half of Two Parties was so good -- like, series-highlight, disappointed-in-the-middle-of-the-episode-that-there-were-only-so-many-minutes-left, waiting-for-this-premise-to-turn-into-a-feature-length-movie good. The other half felt oversaturated, rushed and disorganized, and a waste of Donna with a male stripper and Leslie, Ann and April surrounded by penises and alcohol.
"Pawnee Commons" wasn't the type of Parks and Recreation episode that will make any Best Of lists, nor will it probably convert any people who aren't regular viewers into Pawnee fanatics, but it was satisfying, sweet and funny, and what I talk about when I talk about why I'd take an average Parks & Rec over most other sitcoms on TV right now. We knew from the second Leslie mentioned Eagleton what kind of people and places we were about to see, and I enjoyed every second of it... and felt quite empty knowing that I don't get to have a balloon-artisan-made Leslie and Ben at my desk.
Given that it cast Lindsay Lohan of all people as Elizabeth Taylor, there was no way in hell that the Lifetime-produced biopic Liz & Dick -- which chronicled La Liz's turbulent romance with Richard Burton (played by Grant Bowler) -- was going to be any good. Still, even we were impressed by how terrible the finished product turned out to be -- a telefilm lacking the subtlety, grace and nuance of your average Ed Wood production... or even your typical Lifetime movie-of-the-week. (Let's just say that we expect more from the network that gave us My Stepson, My Lover among other classics.) Here are the ten most ridiculous things about this utterly ridiculous waste of two hours:
