This year's Real Housewives of Orange County reunion took up two nights of programming, but it was probably the most uneventful reunion of any of the show's franchises in years. This made me a little sad, but then I remembered that we're not far off from New York's reunion, and those ladies are reality professionals. So I'm sure this won't happen again. But for now, let's discuss what was lacking and the moments that stood out, for better or worse.
Jason and Molly got married last week, but like most things, it's not real until it's on television. So now they're married for real! Let's go over the best and worst moments of the two hour wedding special that I missed perfectly good new episodes of House and 24 to watch.
This week's SNL had quite a bit of momentum leading into it, with every website in the land fearlessly projecting that Zach Galifianakis would do something revolutionary with his hosting gig. Which is a little unfair, even considering how funny a comedian he is. He did a great job, but it's SNL: things are run by the same old man they always have been, you know? You're not going to get away with much. Don't get me wrong -- it was still a strong episode overall, but the only sketch that really felt extremely Zach was the pageant one, and Hulu and NBC.com are pretending like that sketch didn't even happen. So aside from that one, which was the best one, here are the second, third, fourth and fifth best Zach moments from his hosting gig.
Baby Halpert is finally here, and though we do tend to slam The Office quite a bit around this site (superb Seasons 2 and 3 not withstanding, of course) last night's episode was a truly funny one. I can't tell you how relieved I am that this hour-long Office episode was not only the one of the most enjoyable hour-long episode they've ever done, but also the best episode of the season so far. Sure, there were moments so stupid they took me out of it -- Michael, a grown adult, confusing labor contractions for "contraptions" and Kevin, also a grown adult, thinking they need to put spicy food up Pam's butt to quell her labor pains were a couple of those -- but I laughed out loud numerous times last night, which is something I haven't done in two seasons. As I see it, these were the top five funniest lines of the episode.
Last night's episode of Community was outstandingly funny -- which is saying something, because it's consistently one of the funniest shows on TV. Joel McHale's Jeff Winger is trying so hard to get through community college without losing any of the coolness he's acquired in his lifetime, which is why he thinks a billiards class is the perfect way to accomplish both. But when he finds out he has to wear gym shorts to take the class, he quits for fear of losing his cool. Long story short, a life lesson learned leads him to accept the coach's challenge to a game in shorts -- and the result is magnificent. Check out the clip below.
The weirdest thing about The Marriage Ref is that I knew a lot of people who were unironically excited for it. People who are very invested in television, who usually have great taste in not only TV but comedy as well, looked at those promos and were like "that looks funny." So weird. That must be the Jerry Seinfeld nostalgia that NBC is counting on at work there, because if you take the fact that Seinfeld was a good show out of the equation The Marriage Ref is pretty undeniably terrible.
With all the Super Bowl excitement yesterday and this morning, I almost completely forgot about this weekend's SNL episode. A surprisingly good one, actually, despite the bounding irrelevance of host Ashton Kutcher and the inexplicable phenomenon that occurs when great musicians like Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones collaborate to create some of the dullest music ever (also known as the Jackson-McCartney Effect). Here were the highs and lows of the episode.
It was a relatively low-key Super Bowl, commercial-wise, with a couple spots of brilliance coupled with a whole lot of backwards-thinking and/or uninspired shilling. Here are the best and the worst from last night, as we see them. (And for our take on last night's movie trailers, check out Zach's round-up.)
This weekend Jon Hamm returned to SNL despite having nothing to promote, simply because we're all in love with him. Which is a much better reason than most people have to host that show, so I say, good decision, both SNL and Jon Hamm. As usual, he was enthusiastic, handsome and funny, even when the sketches weren't. I have nothing bad to say about him or his hosting duties, so let's just run down the best and worst sketches of the night.
It was refreshing last Friday when Conan addressed the late night disaster he was embroiled in on his (for now) show with some pointed barbs at NBC. Then on Tuesday, he issued a strongly worded and heartfelt letter to the citizens of Earth about the harm he felt the network was doing to the franchise he loves, and to him personally, and it only strengthened his cause. But is it just me, or has he kind of been acting like a bitch since then?
