Happily Divorced: The Four Most Annoying Things About The Show

Last night, TV Land debuted the new Fran Drescher series Happily Divorced. It's a semi-autobiographical tale of a woman whose two decades of wedded bliss ends when her husband finally decides to tell her that he's gay. But the two continue living together and having "saucy" dating adventures because TV Land's new M.O. is apparently taking character actors from yesteryear and making them perpetually horny (see also: Hot in Cleveland). While the show isn't great, I suppose I could see that people who love Drescher unconditionally (if such people exist) might blindly be amused by it. As for me, I found it excruciating for a variety of reasons.

The Obvious Gay Jokes
Isn't it just so hysterical to have Fran's ex go to the sing-a-long Sound of Music and talk about his former blonde highlights and have everyone poke fun at the fact that she didn't realize her husband was gay? Or that everyone is gay if they are standing in the mere vicinity of men?

The "Racy" Jokes
At one point, Fran's best friend makes a joke about a lack of sex life and a carpal tunnel comment that I suppose might be racy by TV Land standards, but really just comes across as a kid trying to get away with something edgy.

Lame Attempts at Meta Humor
They have Rita Moreno (who plays Drescher's mom) delivering a line about going to see West Side Story. Oh, ha ha, because she was in West Side Story. Oh, I'm falling on the floor and laughing hysterically.

Of Course, Fran Drescher's Voice
I knew this would be an obstacle to overcome, and it is more annoying than ever. They joke about it, but really, that laugh is just not something I will ever be able to get past.
