"Bad Hair Day" was a lesson in using the Modern Family ensemble well. Rather than feeling like a strained mash-up of characters, there was a flow to the storylines, and when everything fell into place for the Pritchett-Dunphy-Delgado men at the end, the big comedic reveal worked -- maybe not as well as it did in "Fulgencio", but still, not bad. If you ignore the missed opportunity for a Married... With Children reunion between David Faustino and Ed O'Neill and choose to overlook yet another jab at Lily's heritage and the moment when Mitch admitted that he and Cam are walking clichés, then this episode was pretty fun and had a few funny lines:
"I will use the baby carrier as a cane."
Gloria's plotline had a lot of set-up without too much payoff (I much prefer Season 2's "Two Monkeys and a Panda" where Phil sneaks off for a spa day... and Ty Burrell's physical comedy with the slippery bowling shoes in this episode, for that matter), but I did like the concept of her trying to be a supermom. And hey, when are they going to add the baby to the show's opening?
"You have to get the tickets before all the good seats are taken."
"You mean the ones that aren't on a plane to Missouri?"
I wasn't a fan of the Oscars product placement, but Mitch had a few good jabs about Cam's humble beginnings that were fun.
"I should get going, my allergies are starting to cry."
Obviously Phil was hilarious all episode, and I loved that we got to see the reality of Claire's alternate future (thanks to guest stars Maribeth Monroe and Grease 2 and Empire Records' Maxwell Caulfield), but otherwise this side plot kind of dragged for me. I preferred the earlier scenes with Luke trying to get his parents to sign his paper, especially when he addressed his dad as, "Hey, handsome!"
"Wow, well, this doesn't look like anything shopping can help you with."
Though I would have been horribly annoyed if some kid on my public bus ride started singing, Jay was cute with Manny and instrumental in pulling off the domino effect in the final act. One thing I didn't understand at all: Closets Closets Closets Closets. Anyone else totally miss the punchline on that?
