Much as I love Rob Riggle, Modern Family does not need Gil Thorpe. His gross sexual harassment of Claire didn't jibe with the sensibility of the show, and there are only so many times I can see Phil get emasculated and take it simultaneously hard and relatively well. On the bright side, by the end of "Career Day," the writers nipped the idea of Claire working with Gil right in the bud.
Otherwise, I enjoyed this episode. There was great physical comedy from Ed O'Neill, a quiet running joke with Mitchell getting aggravated over having to vacuum tooth fairy-dust (I'm just waiting for an episode where we actually get to see Cam all over Pinterest, where he obviously got the idea) and a pretty amazing scene for Sarah Hyland. Here are the highlights:
"I thought I'd offer the kids a chance to put their face on my body."
"Guess what? I've been in your house when you weren't home!"
"Epic fail!"
Phil channeled The Office's Michael Scott throughout "Career Day," and it was fun to watch -- though I did enjoy it more when he was semi-succeeded than when Gil took all the steam out of it.>
"Oh, so there was no one at home to teach you not to interrupt."
Julie Bowen sold the hell out of what she was given... not that she's been handed very much this season. In any event, I also really liked when Gil dismissed the class and the teacher (whose performance I thought was too distracting and stale) frantically had to get her students to stay.
"Typewriter? When is your book signing? 1975?"
"I already called your office and told them can't come in to walk around for 20 minutes, saying to everyone, 'What's up, Sport?'"
I like sarcastic Gloria, and if this is genuinely as good as we're going to get from her, that's fine.
"He literally could not think of one single solitary thing."
Virtually every scene with Jay made me laugh out loud, especially when Stella took center stage. I got kind of annoyed that Manny took less than two seconds to read and critique Jay's entire story (step it up, Rico Rodriguez) but the writers took it to a cute enough place.
"Can I borrow this?" "Why?" "I'd rather not say."
Haley not only looked awesome as the Tooth Fairy, but knowing that she was going straight to Dylan's house after she left Cam and Mitchell's place was so good. (They're still together, right? I've lost track. If not, I'm sure there's another lucky guy who's going to see her in her outfit.) My biggest problem with the storyline is that you could immediately see the $100 bill in Lily's card before she told her dads about it. I'm not certain whether that was to clue us in on the building tension (which doesn't really make sense), or if it was lazy editing that no one caught/bothered to fix.
As always, take a look at "Just the Jokes" a.k.a. "Whatever Hulu Thought Was Kinda Funny":
