We're really starting to think that Modern Family might be better if they didn't feel the need to give every single character a storyline each week. "Larry's Wife" is another example of an episode where some stuff worked really well and some didn't at all. Here's what we wish we had skipped:
Love: The Dunphy Kids' Gambling Ring
We never even got a peek at what exactly was going on down in the basement, but seeing the facial expressions of all the kids and hearing random snippets of conversations was more than enough. These three kids sold it, and Haley managed to confuse Claire with out-of-context talk. Can we get more of these three working together? We think they may be able to take over the world.
Skip: The Dead Cat Wedding
Cameron was our favorite last week with his football coaching skills, but straight-up lying to Lily about her (not) dead cat was annoying, as was the fact that he got friends and neighbors to come to an elaborate funeral for a non-existent household pet. The only highlight was seeing Dylan again.
Love: Phil Dunphy, Real Estate Love Guru
Having Phil be the guy that makes his single-mom clients feel comfortable was just so fitting for his character. And we got to see Diane Farr, so that was also fun. It didn't make us want to throw a parade for the show or anything, but at least it didn't make us want to hit the fast-forward button.
Skip: Mitchell in the Air Ducts
Why is crawling around in air ducts such a TV trope? We're pretty sure we've never met anyone who had to do that for any reason at all. So seeing Mitchell hanging out of one (and naturally knocking over the ladder) was supremely ridiculous.
Love: Jay and Manny's Big Day Out
In their trip to either see The Sound of Music or Death Wish, they argued about the proper way to handle rude and obnoxious people, with Manny wanting to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but even he snapped when someone dissed Mary Poppins. Why is Sound of Music is playing at mall movie theater? We're willing to overlook that if there's a chance for a much-needed lesson in cell phone courtesy.
Skip: Everything with Gloria
The baby is the demon seed? Really? Is this where we are going with this now? We just can't.
Love: Claire Saves the Day
Claire is a master of the art of saving her husband and simultaneously slamming him. She deftly got him out of the jam when all of his single moms converged on him in the supermarket, but also managed to get in a whole host of digs at his expense. She didn't have enough to do in this episode, but her small fast bits were really the best.
