Today we learned a little bit more about Ashton Kutcher's new gig, GLAAD chose CBS as Most Homophobic Network Ever (kidding!), and Charlene Yi signed on to a show way past it's prime.

TWoP 10: Shows That Should Return Next Fall (But Might Not)

We've already put out our plea for bubble show Chuck to return next fall, but plenty more of our favorites are in danger of falling through the network programming cracks. Here's nine more series that deserve another season, but may not get one. We know, we know, wishin' and hopin' didn't do Pushing Daisies any good, but we're sending out a prayer to the TV powers-that-be anyway: when upfront time rolls around in a month or so, please let at least some of these shows reappear on your schedules.

Computer Geeks: A Not-So-Proud TV Tradition

Computer Geeks: A Not-So-Proud TV Tradition

After watching last night's hysterical Season 3 premiere of The IT Crowd, I started thinking about computer geeks on TV, and how there really aren't that many. There are a lot of science geeks, like the physicists of Lost and The Big Bang Theory, but usually it's all about the math, and all they need is a dry erase board. In honor of the unsung heroes of the keyboard (computer, not piano), I thought I'd run down some of my favorites, past and present.

Meh Is the Word

by Lauren Gitlin November 19, 2008 12:45 pm
Meh Is the Word The Simpsons has always been a wellspring of cultural influence, contributing words and phrases to the lexicon ranging from surfer-pilfered Bart-isms like "Cowabunga" and "don't have a cow" to Homer's split-oath "D'Oh" and Nelson's sing-songy taunt "ha-ha." Most recently, the word "meh" was added to the Collins English dictionary, which cited The Simpsons as the term's originator. In ruminating on this latest linguistic development with my cow-orkers®, I had to agree with Zach that it was surprising to see the word affiliated specifically with The Simpsons. I can't remember when exactly I noticed people making use of the word, but I feel like I've been saying it since forever. "Meh" feels like such an instinctively onomatopoetic expression of ambivalence that it's sort of hard to imagine being able to trace it back to its roots. It seems like it's been around forever.

Bye Bye Bart Bass?

by Lauren Gitlin November 11, 2008 11:40 am
Bye Bye Bart Bass? The blogs have been abuzz for weeks about rumors that someone on Gossip Girl is gonna be killed off, and recent photos taken from the set featuring all of the major cast members congregated at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn in their funereal finery seem to confirm the rumor. Everyone has his or her theory (and secret wish) as to who's gonna get it, but all signs thus far seem to point to Bart Bass, and last night's ep only served to confirm this. I'm referring specifically to the chain of events (Dan's thwarted exposé about Bart's shady past and the subsequent heart-to-heart between Bart and Chuck) that led to the revelation of Bart's humanity. Touching, yes, but it was also pretty inarguable proof that homeboy is going down.
