TWoP 10: Most Promising New Shows of the 2010-11 TV Season

This past week, each of the broadcast networks unveiled their fall and midseason lineups at their annual upfront presentations for advertisers and media. While a bunch of the new shows look like they could be dead on arrival, and none totally blew us away, there were a handful of programs that we're definitely already excited about. Here's our early picks for what might be worth watching this fall and next winter/spring.

Yea or Nay? Mitch Hurwitz's New Project Sounds Straight Up Weird

Yea or Nay? Mitch Hurwitz's New Project Sounds Straight Up Weird I'm really not sure what to think about the news that Fox has picked up a new show by Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwtiz. The still-untitled show boasts a coupla AD's original directors, which bodes well for the general awesomeness of the program, but the plot's description has me scratching the old headfordshire in confusion. NY Mag's Vulture blog spoke to producer Jeff Rake, who says the show is a "high-octane action dramedy" (hmmmmm?) about "a Pentagon-based inventor who decided he couldn't live another day standing on the sidelines while Rome burns and accordingly sets out to put his inventions to very real use, behind the backs of friends, family and the entire U.S. government." (Double hmmmmmmm????!) But! He adds that "The heart and fun of the show is the lead character, who, while a badass in his own way, is a very grounded, relatable guy." Huh. Sounds ... confusing, am I right?

Peep Show Isn’t What You Think, But It Still Rules

Peep Show Isn’t What You Think, But It Still Rules

For those of you Anglophiles who already know of the awesomeness that is the British comedy Peep Show, it's time for rejoicing. And for those who don't, hear ye: there's this British comedy, it's called Peep Show, and it is awesome. There. Oh, did you want to know what it's about? How about this? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is "a modern-day Odd Couple centering on Jeremy (Rob Chester Smith), a slacker with misguided musical ambitions, and Mark (Brad Morris), his uptight, office-drone roommate, who are living together and trying to survive the many unexpected hurdles life throws at them. The stories are told with what is described as a 'unique' first-person perspective and voice-over from the characters." I'd add to that simply that it's super-bawdy, and features unfortunate teeth. There, that should do it. Anyway.

The X-Files Meets Moonlighting? I Don’t See Why Not.

The X-Files Meets Moonlighting? I Don’t See Why Not. I've always imagined the hardest part of pitching a series to a network would be choosing just the right "It's like this successful thing meets this other successful thing!" portion of the sell. You'd think one would want to choose accurate examples, whilst remaining not ridiculous, so people will be assured that you're not an idiot and want to invest in your product. Then a week comes along where both a show described as "The Devil Wears Prada meets Taxi" and another show described as "part X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark and part Moonlighting" are announced. All I got to say is I bet all my friends are sorry for laughing at my Hard Rain meets Spy Kids fan fiction now.

View To a Hasselbeck Kill

View To a Hasselbeck Kill Elisabeth Hasselbarf is rumored to be leaving lady chatfest The View and it's not even my birthday! Word is the token right-winger will depart for greener pastures, and by greener pastures I mean token right wing news outlet Fox News. Is this Fox's attempt to compete with MSNBC's lightening rod lezzie leftie Rachel Maddow? Because I think we all know who would win that cage fight -- assuming Hasselboobs hasn't had her acrylics redone in the last 48 hours.

Glam God Casts a Pall on the House of Me

Glam God Casts a Pall on the House of Me Did you guys know that South Bend, Indiana is the style capital of the world? I'd never have guessed it growing up there, but now that I think about it, I guess it makes some sense. Two out of two stars of upcoming stylist-related reality shows are from there: Anne Slowey, fashion director of Elle Magazine and Miranda Priestley stand-in in the upcoming Devil Wears Prada-themed show Stylista , hails from said burg, as does Vivica A. Fox, she of the identically-themed VH1 show Glam God With Vivica A. Fox. It is true that despite the highest strip-mall per capita density I've ever encountered in my not at all scientific surveying of such things, South Bend does boast a handful of stylish folks with a genuine flair for fashion and an eye for creativity. This wholly includes -- and I'm not at all biased here people -- me and my girlfriends. And my mom, who rocked those louvered Kanye West sunglasses before every hip hop artist from here to Dubai got grabby with them. The rest of the town, from what I can tell, is happy to offer itself up to a rather limited array of designers that spans from the Gap to Dress Barn, with some Wet Seal thrown in for the under-fifty set (plenty of soccer moms think it's really cute to dress up like mall rat Lolitas but once they hit the big 5-0 they beggar off. Even they have standards to uphold!).

VH1's Fall Reality Lineup Bites Everyone's Steez

VH1's Fall Reality Lineup Bites Everyone's Steez Kathy Griffin did it. Sarah Silverman did it. Now raunch-tastical comedienne Margaret Cho is throwing her hat into the TV ring with The Cho Show, a reality show airing on VH1 that sounds, based on the description, like a mix between My Life on the D List and Celebrity Circus: "This VH1 series will follow the irrepressible Margaret Cho and her eccentric entourage as she fights to be herself in an industry that in the past wanted her to be something other than herself. The series will touch upon all aspects of Margaret's 'anything goes' lifestyle, from the strained and awkward moments provided by her somewhat traditional Korean parents to the more irreverent and outrageous moments shared with her colorful cast of friends and colleagues."
