If you're just getting hooked on Torchwood in its current Miracle Day incarnation, here's a good way to catch up on all the good stuff you missed...

Judgment Daze: We Rate This Summer's Reality TV Judges

Judgment Daze: We Rate This Summer's Reality TV Judges

Some of us may still be recovering from the cultural moment that was American Idol, but it looks like there's no rest for the weary reality fan ahead. A plethora of talent competition shows, including The Voice, America's Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance and last night's Platinum Hit, all take center stage this summer. But no matter how fantastic, absurd, or otherwise unpredictable their respective contestants are, it's the judges that give them their -- pardon the pun -- voice, not to mention their mood, sense of humor and overall vibe. And yes, they also give the shows their legitimacy (or lack thereof). Here's how each judge rates:

NBC's 2011 Upfront Presentation: We're Trying, We're Really, Really Trying

So this network upfront actually broke some news, albeit unsurprising news that no one really cared about, but news nonetheless. Towards the end of the very lengthy two hour presentation, Donald Trump came out to announce that he was going to continue making money on The Celebrity Apprentice and not take a run at the presidency. He made it sound like he was doing us a favor, but I cover entertainment television, so having him stick around on reality TV isn't really helping me at all.

Aside from that, the rest of the presentation was fairly typical, and filled with all the NBC executives reminding us as frequently as possible that The Voice is a big success. I tried keeping count of how often they mentioned the show's name, but they worked it in so seamlessly to nearly every segment that it was almost impossible. And just when I thought they couldn't mention it one more time, they had Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo come out at the end of the presentation to sing. Fortunately, I was already heading out the door at that point.

Skating With the Stars: Blades of Boring

Skating With the Stars: Blades of Boring

This show tried to make me believe that it was the most dangerous competition on TV, but c'mon. I watch The Challenge on a regular basis and those people are 50 feet up in the air dangling on a string or something between buildings. Jonny Moseley used to host that program (back when it still had the Real World/Road Rules moniker), so I'm surprised he didn't call the Skating With the Stars producers out on that. Frankly, I think even Wipeout is more dangerous.

Emmy Award Nominations 2010: Our Gut Reactions

Emmy Award Nominations 2010: Our Gut Reactions

This might be the first Emmy nomination morning in a number of years that didn't leave us pounding our heads into the wall. That's not to say that there weren't a great deal of snubs (there were) or that undeserving people didn't get recognized (they did), but the number of happy surprises eased much of the frustration that we would otherwise feel. For us, the biggest pleasant surprise was that Friday Night Lights's tremendous husband and wife duo (played by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton) were finally nominated for their years of brilliant, ignored work. The other big highlight was getting to watch nomination presenter Sofia Vergara stumble over pretty much everyone's name -- so much so that co-presenter Joel McHale generously pronounced "Hargitay" for her. And as if that wasn't enough to charm us, McHale also coped with his Emmy snub far better than we did, by simply shrugging and saying, "It's OK, I phoned it in." Is there an Emmy for best sport? Anyway, on with the rest of our initial reactions to this year's nominees.

TWoP 10: Off-the-Beaten-Path Shows We Love

TWoP 10: Off-the-Beaten-Path Shows We Love

There are a million TV channels out there these days, so when summertime comes around, we really have time to explore the vast world of random television programming. While we dig big shows like True Blood and So You Think You Can Dance, it's the more quirky, niche shows that really have us hooked this season, even if their names may garner blank stares from most folks when when we mention them. Below are some shows that may be off your radar but are worth checking out.

Why It’s Time to Give Heroes Another Chance

Why It’s Time to Give Heroes Another Chance

I know a lot of you out there have given up on Heroes, and frankly I can't blame you. Last season was a horrible shadow of its former self, and this fall's "Villains" arc -- well, the less said about that the better. But this fourth volume, aka "Fugitives," is a marked improvement. Now I'm not going to say it is perfect, as I still have some complaints from my list of things that were wrong with the show, but it is moving in the right direction and shockingly, I'm actually looking forward to episodes again. So while I haven't seen tonight's ep yet, I feel somewhat confident in advising you Heroes deserters to come back for a second look. Because if it actually gets back to its first season glory by the end of this year (which it seems like it is at least attempting to do) you are going to be kicking yourself for not hopping back in sooner.

TWoP 10: Characters Who Should Return to Their Shows

TWoP 10: Characters Who Should Return to Their Shows

Most of the time we complain about characters on shows that we just hate with a passion and hope would go far, far away. But occasionally shows could be livened up by the reappearance of an old character (and no we don't necessarily mean the dead ghost ones, Denny). Hence the reason we're pretty psyched that George Clooney finally decided to bring back his hunky Dr. Doug Ross to ER (which is the only acceptable reason for them adding on extra episodes) before the show signs off. So we've compiled another list of characters that need to return to their old posts, stat.

Just What We Needed! More Dancing on TV!

Just What We Needed! More Dancing on TV!

Don't get me wrong. I love So You Think You Can Dance. I aspire to be on America's Best Dance Crew (despite the fact that I can't hip-hop dance AT ALL). I kinda secretly adore the chaos of Dancing With the Stars. But I'm not sure I really needed another dance show. And yet, the adorable Nigel Lythgoe (and producing partner Simon Fuller) are unleashing Superstar Dancers of the World (which is thankfully listed as a working title and needs to be changed ASAP) on America sometime early next year.

Top Chef Insanity Starts Now

Top Chef Insanity Starts Now The angels are singing! The new season of Top Chef kicks off tonight, and I got to chat with host/judges Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio about what to expect. Over the course of the (very) long conference call, P and T discussed their new judge, writer Toby Young, a pretty rad line-up of guest judges, their own guilty pleasures and the ingredient they're most sick of. They mentioned only one of the new contestants -- Fabio -- by name, so do with that info what you will. They also took on haters who have implied that Top Chef is an easy ticket to success for lazy chefs, and if you're so inclined you can read about what they had to say at NY Mag's Grub Street blog. Otherwise, read on for the highlights.
