It was a sweet and classy move to open the show with the New York City Children's Chorus singing "Silent Night" in honor of all the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, but unfortunately, the classiness ended there and then it all turned into a string of jokes about sex and the numerous things you could call a woman's vagina. Still, this Martin Short episode (which might as well have been the Paul McCartney episode, as they probably had about the same amount of airtime) had a bunch of guest stars and some funny moments. Alec Baldwin as Tony Bennett, was not among them.
The Cold Open: Silent Night
Not what you'd call funny, but still the highlight of the show.
The Monologue
Not for the song about the randiest time of the year, but for all the cameos. There was Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Kristen Wiig, Samuel L. Jackson, Tina Fey and especially Martin Short kissing Lorne Michaels.
You're a Rat Bastard, Charlie Brown
Well, the play Dog Sees God already did an edgier take on Charlie Brown, but this was a chance for the cast to show off all of their impressions, including Martin Short's Larry David/Linus. And Fran Drescher jokes just never get old.
What's Up With That?
For the agitated Samuel L. Jackson-ness of it all, and for the Portlandia dig at Fred Armisen.
Weekend Update: The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With At a Party
While we shuddered a bit because we know people like this preachy, texting nightmare, she really hit her character spot on, with lines like "It's a tragesty [sic]" and "Learn a book." Or, our personal favorite, "Why can't Secret Santa just be openly gay?"
Holiday Pageant: The Auditions
Only to watch Martin Short berate Paul McCartney for being a terrible singer.
