Reports are saying that Chris Meloni is done with his very lengthy run on Law & Order: SVU and while this is probably devastating news for die hard fans of that show, we're excited that it gives the talented actor a chance to spread his wings and do something else for a while. He was amazing on Oz and cracks us up on Sesame Street and in the Harold and Kumar movies (not to mention his sweater-fondling work in Wet Hot American Summer). So here are the other shows that we think should scoop Chris Meloni up stat.
Aaaaaaaaaaaand... they're out of here. The powers that be at the various networks got out their axes and started chopping this week in preparation for upfronts, and while guilty pleasure Off the Map and the genuinely solid cop dramas The Chicago Code and Detroit 1-8-7 were butchered in the process, most of the cuts were richly deserved. Here are the ones we're least likely to miss:
We've all been inundated with Royal Wedding coverage this week, which only served to make us appreciate TV's greatest (and thankfully scripted) weddings of all time. If nothing else, they didn't inspire weeks of mind-numbing analysis beforehand. But with so many notable nuptials throughout the history of primetime television, some just didn't make the cut for our list of the ten very best. That's right, Jim and Pam, your boating adventure just wasn't memorable enough. If only your ship had sunk...
The CW recently announced that we'll be treated an all-star season of America's Next Top Model next fall. That's right, they're bringing all the really crazy bitches back. Well, contestant-wise, anyway -- we sadly doubt that Janice or Paulina will be included in the festivities. Anyway, this is a fantastic idea, although some of the enjoyable personalities from earlier seasons might be a bit long in the tooth to viably compete for the completely useless title of "All-Star Top Model" (the show started in 2003, after all). Here's our wish-list of who we hope they'll cast:
The short answer to that question is yes. Zombies make everything better. But unfortunately this week's episode of Hellcats was only good during the course of the zombie movie, and the rest of it was an awkward disaster. It's a secret shame of mine that I've been watching this show since the beginning, but n my defense, it's an awful trainwreck that I just can't take my eyes off of. The show's about a cheerleading law student who gets people out of jail and gets laws overturned, but who loves wearing half-shirts and appears to spend the majority of her time in a bar obsessing over boys instead of studying. In other words, it's mesmerizingly absurd and I was hoping that the addition of zombies would push the preposterousness into full-on guilty pleasure mode. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
Last week, The CW re-aired the pilot for Smallville to lead into the final episodes of the series, and it just made me nostalgic for the show's early days. This comic-book-inspired show had so much potential and plenty of charm back then, infusing high school drama with sci-fi twists. Obviously, things have changed since then, and not for the better. Here's what we miss the most:
5 Reasons You Should Be Watching The Fabulous Beekman Boys
If you missed last summer's gay farming sensation The Fabulous Beekman Boys (and you likely did, as it's on Discovery property Planet Green, which no one has heard of), I highly recommend jumping into the show's second season premiere tonight. The show, about a gay couple from NYC trying to maintain a farm in the country, is some of the most enjoyable light entertainment on television, and whether you're into gay shows or goat shows, it's got a little something for everyone.
ABC Family's Greek signed off Monday night, and much as I was charmed by this brightly colored drunken look at college fraternity life for the last few years, I was glad that they decided to end it. Frankly, it was getting more than a little bit awkward to keep finding reasons for Cappie not to graduate, or for Ashleigh and Casey to remain tied to their sorority. Not to mention that Rusty, who was supposed to be one of the youngest of the bunch, had a rapidly receding hairline that seems like it is going to render him bald by the end of the year. He was cute and nerdy at the start of the series, but at this point, it would've been hard to reboot the show built around an old-looking guy like him.
This show is not, nor will it ever be, Grey's Anatomy. However, last night's episode, which I primarily watched because it featured the return of Xander the rapist, delivered a major shock that I totally didn't see coming. And that's saying something because when visiting Shondaland, I almost always have a hunch of what's coming (except for Dell's demise, because that was just mishandled and I still can't really talk about that). Anyway, this twist threw me for a loop... and in a good way. [Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched.]
Oh, this show. It started out with such promise and just devolved into this terrible mess of a predictable soapy series that was finally put out of its misery last night. Because of the abbreviated season and the rushed finale, a lot of convoluted storylines that were previously being dragged out got wrapped up rather quickly for the sole purpose of giving every character a cloyingly sweet happy ending by the close. This was not the Life Unexpected I signed up for when I watched the charming and heartbreaking pilot a year and a half ago.
