While many shows try to do very special Thanksgiving episodes, most of them degenerate into a muddle of typical family feuding and melodrama. And if we wanted to see disastrous family meals, we would just tune in to Brothers & Sisters on any given week. But every few seasons, at least one great show gives a holiday episode we can be truly thankful for. Here our favorites from the recent and far past:
What happened to the sweet, misguided, soapy show that I used to tune into after Grey's for some bizarre medical cases and hot doctors having sex and dressing inappropriately? It's slowly been disappearing, and getting to be more about ethical dilemmas and some actual drama, but the last two weeks have been doozys of episodes, particularly last night. (If you haven't watched, and you actually care, there are spoilers ahead).
Classic Characters We'd Like to See Revived on Current Shows
I loved T-Bag from Prison Break; in fact, he was one of the best things about that stupid show. When we last saw him, he was being hauled off to solitary confinement for unknowingly helping Michael bust Sara out of jail. But now Robert Knepper is reprising the role of T-Bag on the upcoming show Breakout Kings from Prison Break producers Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora. I'd love it if other producers reached back to their old shows and revived some of our favorite characters on their current projects. Here's our wish list:
It was reported the other day that The CW was only going to give Life Unexpected 13 episodes for its sophomore season, which makes the chances for a third season fairly slim. As viewers of this guilty pleasure, we just hope that the show will answer several burning questions for us while they still have time. No, not whether Cate and Baze end up together (we don't care), but the really important stuff.
Last night's episode of Parenthood was certainly heart-tugging, but it didn't stand up to the best Halloween episodes of all time. Last year we had the 10 best episodes of all time, but we've added a few more to the list and have our fingers crossed that Glee's Rocky Horror, Community's supposedly outrageous episode and Modern Family's twisted holiday will soon be among our all-time favorites.
It seems like Jimmy Smits' new drama Outlaw is pretty much doomed. While not outright canceled, production has been halted while NBC evaluates the show's performance. It seems unlikely that the already filmed episodes will do much to change the network's opinion, but if they do, perhaps the producers could take advantage of their hiatus by retooling the show based on what's working for other series this fall. Hey, it couldn't hurt worse than its already preposterous premise. Here are our suggestions:
Fox's Lone Star only lasted two poorly rated episodes before it officially became the first casualty of the fall 2010-11 television season. But while the con man series didn't click with viewers, it did have a pretty great cast. I'm hoping that since their show got cancelled so quickly, there's time for them to join another existing series later this season. Here's who should go where:
It's safe to say that Syfy's Battlestar Galactica is one of the best television shows of all time, so it isn't a complete surprise that any role that a veteran of the show takes seems like a downgrade. Still, some of the cast members have fared better than others following the show's end. With one of the key players now starring on fall's much-hyped Hawaii Five-0, we were inspired to rank all of the major actors' post-BSG stints. Who is still flying high and whose career has turned into a pile of space detritus? See our list below, ranked from best to worst.
Last season, I was charmed by the sweet tale of a 16-year-old who sought out her birth parents so she could get emancipated and ended up finding a family. Well, charmed for one episode, before Life Unexpected turned into a ridiculous love triangle between Cate and Baze and Ryan that just went around and around until I felt like I was going to puke from the whole tilt-a-whirl of it all. And Lux (the initially adorable teen) ended up being a totally selfish and unrealistic ass who dated a guy named Bug and was mainly good at turning people against each other. By the time Cate and Ryan's wedding rolled around at the end of the season, which Baze tried to crash and Lux tried to manipulate, I was completely over this show. But, being the masochist that I am, I decided to give the Season 2 premiere a look. The result: I only wanted to punch the screen some of the time, which is a marked improvement. Here are what I hope are the signs of good things to come this year:
Smallville Season Ten hasn't even started yet, but it looks like they're ready for the show to go the way of Krypton. At the Television Critics Association press tour, the president of the CW said that she'd love to say that Smallville is going off the air and "something else is coming on." With sci-fi adventurer Blue Beetle and time-travelling egotist Booster Gold rumored to appear on Smallville this season, they're the frontrunners for a spin-off series, but we can think of a bunch of DC superheroes who are much more deserving.
