Good news, fans of sexy vampire TV shows: True Blood got picked up for a second season after airing just two episodes. (Ep. 2 got a nice bump... likely because they didn't air it during a holiday weekend!) Either HBO's real desperate, or it knows that its got a slow-building culty hit on its hands. I'm hoping for the later, but I'm kind of a realist these days, so it is probably the former. Having read a bunch of the Sookie Stackhouse books (or the Southern Vampire novels as they are oft referred to) there's a lot of potential. Given that the first two episodes are mostly in keeping with the first novel (with a few additional and amalgam characters), but only tackle a few chapters, I presume that the first season will finish out the tale the unfurls in book one.

I want you guys to be the first to know that vampires are totally, totally the new black. For proof, look no further than the latest in a string of Dracula-referencing additions to the pop culture stew (which already includes the band Vampire Weekend, the Facebook vampire function and a little movie called Twilight). I'm talking of course about the new Alan Ball-helmed HBO series True Blood, based on the cult book series Southern Vampire by Charlaine Harris, which tells the tale of a clairvoyant waitress (played by the button-cute Anna Paquin) who befriends a Victorian-era vampire named Bill (sexy-hot Brit Stephen Moyer) in a backwoods Louisiana town. The show's back story -- since the creation of synthetic blood, vampires have 'come out' in society and are in the process of assimilating, facing prejudice and adulation (via vampire groupies dubbed 'fang bangers') in equal measure -- has been months in the making thanks to a slew of viral microsites devoted to the propagation of the True Blood mythology.

The first viral marketing stunts from HBO's fall vampire drama True Blood are pretty damn genius, and they have me even more excited than I already was for Alan Ball's (Six Feet Under HBIC) new series. The first (after the jump), is a parody of Chemistry.com's ads which had me rolling all around my cube in a gigglefit, and the second, is well, even better (hint: a picket sign that says "God hates fangs!" is involved). I don't know, maybe the next time a vampire asks me out I'll try to keep my prejudice in check and take a chance on tolerance.
