The unthinkable has happened. After eight seasons, Law & Order: Criminal Intent will be without lead detective Robert Goren for the first time, as Vincent D'Onofrio will be leaving the show to do more film work. And he's not alone, either -- Kathryn Erbe (Det. Eames), Julianne Nicholson (Det. Wheeler) and Eric Bogosian (Capt. Ross) are all leaving the show, as well. Who does that leave? Pretty much just new hire Jeff Goldblum, who just finished his first season as Det. Nichols. While it can't feel good to have all of your fellow cast members quit on you, we're glad Goldblum is sticking around, because now he can be the lead detective in a show cast entirely by us! Well, almost -- they've already replaced Nicholson with Saffron Burrows, formerly of My Own Worst Enemy. But here's who we think should fill the rest of the vacant spots.

If you caught the second episode of the new season of Law & Order: Criminal intent, you got to see Zach Nichols (played by new cast member Jeff Goldblum) unleash his highly unorthodox detecting skills on New York City's criminal population. Yes, even more unorthodox than Vincent D'Onofrio's Det. Goren, whom he trades off episodes with. We're not quite sure Nichols totally knows what he's doing, but Goldblum is hypnotic to watch, as always, and we were lucky enough to get in on a conference call with him and ask him some questions about the cancellation of Raines and the existence of Sasquatch. (That last one wasn't ours, we swear, but it's included here for your entertainment.)

The Law & Order franchise is not what it once was. The original series (plain old L&O) has gone through cast shake-up after shake-up, and just had one of its weakest seasons. Special Victims Unit is full of superstar talent -- America's sweethearts Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni, plus their cranky back-ups Ice-T and Richard Belzer -- but each episode of that show finds a way to ignore their special victims mandate. Only Criminal Intent, exiled to the USA Network, has continued to do what it does so well with the same two leads it's always had. It's the best show in the franchise, and it's only going to get better with this season's changes. If you didn't watch Sunday night's Season 8 premiere, here are our reasons for you to tune in for Episode 2.

Holy jeez! The Fly is gonna be on Law & Order Criminal Intent you say? He is gonna be replacing Chris Noth, who will be departing after this season wraps you say? Well I just don't know what to think! I mean, Goldblum is a foxy Cleopatra and all, and as we saw on his short-lived NBC show Raines, he can deffies handle a role as a quirk-tastic police detective. But no more Noth is like no more Jerry Orbach: Just plain wrong. The upside of this new development is that we can most assuredly expect a spectacular Dick Wolf-ian send-off for good old Mike Logan. No budget cut-backs or polite pink slips for this guy. Not even a shot-in-the-line-of-duty plot twist is his equal. I'm thinking a car bomb with wicked pyrotechnics or a hostage situation gone bad or, hell, maybe a botched plastic surgery that he was getting for an "undercover" thingy he claimed he was doing. But something cray cray. I will accept no less.
