My love of Drop Dead Diva is well documented. I should be more ashamed of it than I am (and believe me, I'm pretty ashamed of it), but you know how it is: summertime, lowered expectations, Legally Blonde nostalgia, etc. -- I can't help it! And while last night's Season 3 premiere was just as mindlessly pleasing as this show has always been (minus the painfully lingering Grayson-as-Jane's-soulmate-arc that won't die even though it really should), while watching it I had a lot of, for lack of a better term, "that's so Raven!"-esque moments whenever the episode dipped into its most stereotypically Drop Dead Diva writing and directing wells. There were dozens of these moments last night, but the following are the eight most prominent.

Annals Of Fantasy Stuntcasting, Cool Stuff We Need, Really Ridiculous Reality Shows
The World According to... Anyone But ParisWe're not sure that anyone actually demanded an inside look at Paris Hilton's life, but nevertheless, Oxygen is rolling out The World According to Paris this week. To be honest, we'll probably tune in only because we think she's strangely fascinating and, whether you like it or not, extremely talented in the art of self-promotion (for example: a show called The World According to Paris airing on Oxygen). But with that said, there are plenty of other celebrities that we would've rather seen as the focus of a series like this. Here's just a few:
-
Paula Abdul and Rosie O'Donnell, two women who are seemingly capable of generating a storm of publicity with whatever controversy they manage to be involved in at any given time, are surprisingly scandal-free in their news today. Real-life polygamy will also be gracing your screens this fall. The pinnacle of civilization has finally been reached.

It's summer, and I have nothing else to talk about, which means it's time to pretend to be serious about Drop Dead Diva again. Don't get me wrong -- I actually adore the show, despite knowing how bad it is for me, it's just that... it seems silly to review a premiere like this. What am I going to say? The writing is still terrible? The acting is still bad? That it still has no right to be an hour long? That the courtroom scenes remain as ludicrous as Legally Blonde's? All those things were true last season, and they were true of last night's Season 2 premiere. You know, Drop Dead Diva just might be the most consistent show on television, when you think about it.

Lost is over, but there's still plenty of TV news to read. Optimism!
-
Today's TV news has a a pretty fair distribution of the bad (Paula Abdul and Star Search) and the good (every other piece of news). It's a balancing act, really.

Ugly Betty seems to be taking over today, but a few gems managed to shine through, like an awesomely new graphic-novel-turned-series about zombies as well as the greenlight for lots of scripted shows from an unexpected network.

Steve Harvey becomes a news reporter, Cartoon Network wants to stop showing cartoons, and ABC decided it would be a good idea to subject everyone to another on-screen version of The Time Traveler's Wife. Never mind all the other stuff -- I just want to know who thought it'd be funny to put crack in everyone's OJ this morning.

The internet recently went wild with the news that Michael Rosenbaum (a.k.a. Lex Luthor) would be returning to Smallville for the season finale. Now, for the first time in years, we're genuinely excited about an episode of that show. So with that in mind, we got to thinking about some other actors and actresses who we wish would find their way back to their former series for at least a guest appearance, even if they've already moved on to new roles.

So many new shows today! I use the term "new" quite loosely, but what do you expect? As for casting, we say goodbye to one resident of The Hills, and hello again to a familiar face on House. Oh, and Paula is still around.
