It was a sweet and classy move to open the show with the New York City Children's Chorus singing "Silent Night" in honor of all the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, but unfortunately, the classiness ended there and then it all turned into a string of jokes about sex and the numerous things you could call a woman's vagina. Still, this Martin Short episode (which might as well have been the Paul McCartney episode, as they probably had about the same amount of airtime) had a bunch of guest stars and some funny moments. Alec Baldwin as Tony Bennett, was not among them.

With fall TV in full swing, there are already shows getting cancelled, others getting full-season pickups and still more returning shows that could use a little help. While some programs have problems that could take an entire year to repair (see: House), these other series just need some quick fixes that would make them exponentially more entertaining almost immediately.

Any Anna Faris fan who saw What's Your Number? (or didn't because of its terrible reviews) and watched Saturday Night Live this weekend probably went into the show with the hope that it wouldn't suck -- after all, we don't just like her in vain, right? I personally got affirmation watching the episode, and laughed more than I have at SNL in a while. That's not to say a few sketches failed from a sore lack of editing (looking at you, "Wyndemere" and "GOP Debate II"), but all in all, the episode was a relieving surprise. In the spirit of Ms. Faris, here at the sketches that delivered more laughs than her entire last movie did.

Today we learned a little bit more about Ashton Kutcher's new gig, GLAAD chose CBS as Most Homophobic Network Ever (kidding!), and Charlene Yi signed on to a show way past it's prime.

It's a good week to be Sir Elton John. The contestants on American Idol will be singing his songs this week and the man himself will be hosting (not just performing on, hosting) Saturday Night Live this weekend. I'd say that's great corporate synergy, but the shows are on two different networks, so I'll just assume that Elton John is launching some sort of all-out assault on network television. After upping his fame among the youngfolk on Idol, then demonstrating his acting chops on SNL, what else could be next besides making a play for his own primetime TV series? We scanned his back catalog to find song titles that might come in handy when it comes time to name his sitcom, or even his crime drama.

Helen Mirren was the special guest on last night's SNL, and it was... a mixed bag, as it so often is. I guess when there's an hour and a half to fill, you let some go through that aren't as strong to fill out the time. But Mirren showed a complete lack of reserve by really going for it in her sketches, playing an old stripper, a Fox News caller and Helena Bonham Carter. These are the best and worst of the night.
