Let's Review, Shall We?, Skimming Across the Pond
Torchwood: Miracle Day: Out With the Old, In With the NewIt's not exactly a secret that I love Torchwood and that I was impatiently waiting for Friday night's season premiere. While there were some moments that were fantastic, a lot of it felt like set-up and left me underwhelmed. It seems like this 10-episode arc is trying too hard to bring in a new audience by debuting in the US on Starz before airing in the UK and moving the setting of the show stateside as well. Because of that, this isn't exactly the same show that I've loved all along. Then again, this episode didn't exactly make it easy for new viewers to jump right in. So its somewhere in the middle of the road and hopefully in the second episode they'll pick up the pace, get their groove back and everyone will have a clue what the hell is going on.

For Torchwood fans, this won't be such a beautiful day.

We're not sure that the world really needs a spinoff to Criminal Minds, but then again, we didn't think sub-divisions of Law & Order were necessary and SVU and Criminal Intent proved us wrong by being far more enjoyable than their mothership. And while spinoffs may not always grab us right off the bat (like NCIS: Los Angeles), sometimes a new series just needs a little time before it starts improving upon its predecessor. Case in point: The City returned this week with new characters and a compelling new focus that made it far more watchable than the now totally contrived LC-less The Hills. But these aren't the only shows that have been better than their originals. Here's our look back at the best spinoffs from the past two decades:

Now, imagine this was a bloody railroad! Sounds amazing, right?!

James Marsters knows what he likes, and he knows what people like to see him in. From Buffy to Angel to Smallville to Torchwood, he's made legendary appearances on some of the greatest science-fiction and fantasy shows of the past decade, and he's about to start yet another. Marsters will tackle the role of religious fanatic Barnabas, the man behind the Caprica bombings for a multi-episode run on Syfy's new series Caprica. Never ones to turn down talking to Spike, we sat in on a conference call to ask him about his character, whether he'll return to Torchwood or the Buffyverse, and what he thinks of all these new vampires running around.

Are there only five famous people in the world right now? I'm getting so sick of the same actors and celebrity judges all the time! If Hollywood's okay with casting the same people over and over again, why not make Fred Willard an Idol host?

Can't They Just Leave Well Enough Alone?, Skimming Across the Pond
Torchwood: The Pros and Cons of a U.S. RemakeFox is teaming up with Russell T. Davies to work on developing an Americanized version of the popular British show Torchwood. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a sci-fi series that involves a small team of crime fighters who deal primarily with the otherworldly. As a fan of the show, my initial reaction to the Fox news was of horror, and while I'm still highly skeptical that this remake should ever make it to the screen, there are some potentially good things about the idea. Here are the pros and cons of bringing Captain Jack across the Atlantic:

If you didn't watch the Torchwood: Children of Earth miniseries, you are seriously missing out. You should also not read this very spoiler-filled review that is below. Just know that the DVD is in stores now, and even if you aren't a fan of the show you should go buy it right this very minute, because this is one of the best things I've personally seen on television in a while. And it's an easy series to jump into for newcomers. It's just a show about three cops working at a very underground agency called Torchwood, specializing in alien crimes. Do yourself a favor. Buy it. Now. Trust me.
