Strangely quite a bit of news this Thursday! Charlie Sheen's roast gets an MC, George Lopez's show gets cancelled, and The CW gets on the Glee train.

The worst possible thing that could happen at a network upfront event actually occurred this morning for TBS and TNT... and it turned out to be the best possible thing that could've happened. In front a packed house of advertisers, media buyers, network executives and journalists, the meticulously choreographed presentation ground to a screeching halt not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times due to technical difficulties that prevented the giant video screens from displaying picture. But what could've been a devastating embarrassment for the networks resulted in a series of live, unrehearsed performances that had more electricity than any of the sitcoms previewed by NBC, Fox and ABC earlier this week.

There are lots of new shows on the block, but they seem to be reminiscent of shows we know and love. Lost is coming to an end, so naturally, another show is looking to take its place. Octomom finally got her own reality show, which is basically another version of Jon & Kate Plus Eight. Well, without Jon. The only original TV show in the news is Steven Spielberg's pilot about aliens, and even that's pushing it. Anyway, there are some good news and some tragic news; you'll laugh and you'll cry, so proceed with caution.

Oh, TBS. Despite the sporadic relief of Office re-runs and the less-awful-than-all-the-other-orginial-series-on-its-network My Boys, there's really no better way to slap a slogan like "Very Funny" in the face than with The Bill Engvall Show, Tyler Perry's House of Payne, Frank TV and Everybody Loves Raymond re-runs. And now, as if those weren't bad enough, TBS has given the guy who helmed The Bill Engvall Show, The Drew Carey Show and George Lopez a sitcom starring Valerie Bertinelli, which is just unbelievable.

Speaking as someone who occasionally finds herself awake at ridiculous hours of the night and very much enjoys having something she can turn on, pay no attention to, and hopefully fall asleep by, I find myself concerned that Nick at Nite is allowing its selection of overnight sitcoms to deteriorate. I understood when they added Full House, because at least it's sort of a camp classic, even if it's not up there with classic Nick selections like Cheers and Roseanne.

But, dude...George Lopez? Really? You want me to watch George Lopez when I'm lying awake at two in the morning? I realize that the slavish devotion to The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which NatN ran so many times that I think I saw every single one three times (Ben Vereen, you bastard!) was perhaps a sign of trouble, but there are plenty of Cosby episodes. We still love Furniture City! Somehow, I feel like George Lopez represents some sort of crossing of the Rubicon, where after this, it's going to be Yes, Dear and Still Standing. On Nick At Nite. Where I'd sooner see The Facts Of Life or Who's The Boss? return to regular rotation, rather than begin the long, painful plunge into the ABC vault.
