It's awards season again, which means that we're mostly flummoxed by the people who come up with nominations for the various prizes. Yesterday, we were scratching our heads over the fact that the SAG Awards had picked Suits' Patrick J. Adams for a Best Actor nom instead of Homeland's Damian Lewis, while today we're wondering how anyone could think Boss had a better season than Breaking Bad. But hey, at least the Hollywood Foreign Press Ass gave the gut-wrenching and brilliantly performed Homeland its due, along with showering Downton Abbey with four nominations. But how did Community and Parks & Recreation get overlooked in the comedy nominations? And how is Alec Baldwin nominated again? And who thinks Mireille Enos is a good actress on The Killing? Our prayers have been answered. After Chelsea Handler proved to be absolutely terrible at last year's Video Music Awards, MTV has decided to ditch tradition and have no host at Sunday night's award ceremony. There are plenty of other shows that we wish would follow this example, as well as a few we hope never try to be as ahem edgy as MTV.

Ordinarily, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's decision to hire the first host of the Golden Globe Awards since 1995 would be considered a huge mistake. After all, one of the charms of that telecast -- aside from the fact that attendees are able to drink at their seats throughout the evening, of course -- is just how fast the ceremony usually flies by thanks to the lack of awkward, forced patter from an eager-to-please host. But in the case of the 2010 Globes (airing Jan. 17, 8PM ET, NBC), we're happy to have the evening in the hands of Ricky Gervais, who, when not creating brilliant television comedy, has spent the last several years often single-handedly enlivening dull awards shows as a presenter or winner. In an interview with us and other media outlets, he explained how he's going to bring his signature style to his role as MC for what has ordinarily been a three-hour schmooze fest.
