At first glance, the idea of MTV adapting Teen Wolf into a dramatic television series looks like a pretty dumb idea. First of all, they've got an audience of 12-year-olds who have never heard of the movie, so there goes your built-in nostalgia support. And then there's the issue that remakes are often terrible and unnecessary, and of all people to do justice to a campy '80s classic, MTV is hardly the paragon of quality and creativity to be tackling such a mission. All true things. But I kinda think it's a good idea, despite all of that.
The final upfront of this nutty week was actually the fastest. Thanks to The CW for having an audience with a short attention span and realizing that long strings of numbers were meaningless. There was a DJ booth and they provided snacks (some nuts and an apple). Promising start.
The third day of upfronts brought us the endurance test that is the CBS presentation, held for the umpteenth year in freezing-cold Carnegie Hall. And once again, I was bemused by how defensive the executives sounded while touting the most successful network on television. CBS has the most popular drama (CSI), the most popular comedy (Two and a Half Men) and the most popular new show of the 2008-09 season (The Mentalist). And yet there's this undercurrent of resentment towards their lower-rated, but far "cooler," competitors that's actually fascinating from an armchair psychologist's perspective.
Finally, upfront week is over and all the networks have revealed their schedules. Friday nights are shaping up to be busy... if you are still watching Smallville or Ugly Betty. The CW unleashed their five night lineup today, and it is filled with more pretty people than you can stand. So start planning out what you'll be watching and when, with our handy little schedule below. And no, that's not a typo, both 90210 and Melrose Place are back on TV. Get more details on the CBS, Fox, ABC and NBC fall slates and midseason lineups here.
It's the second day of upfronts, and while I was excited for this afternoon's ABC event because V is one of the new shows I'm most looking forward to, they had already announced this morning that it wouldn't be debuting until midseason, which dampened my enthusiasm a little. On the plus side, it was another upfront presentation that is conveniently streamed so that I didn't have to trek anywhere to see it.
It's the start of upfront week, and while Fox revealed their schedule this morning, the presentation showing off their actual new programming until this afternoon. It took place at City Center in Manhattan, but thanks to the magic of the web, I got to watch it from my mostly comfy desk chair. It started off with a guide to surviving the onslaught of new TV. Using clips of Homer telling us about nutrition, Bones keeping us hip with lingo and something with The Family Guy's Peter. Then they revealed the stage, which was filled with Fox stars. People from each show came to the front and took a quick bow, while the announcer said their names. Or tried to. He brutalized everyone from Chi McBride to Tyler Labine to, most egregiously, Lie to Me's Brenda Hines. He (being Brendan) got a good laugh out of it. They all trickled off stage, leaving only Kiefer "Jack Bauer" Sutherland.
NBC had their "infront" presentation today in 30 Rock's Studio 8H (aka SNL's studio) and while media types were treated to a look at their new slate of shows, we really didn't get that many answers or any kind of a schedule. All of that will apparently be magically revealed on May 19 at another NBC event -- until then we're left hanging about the fates of bubble shows like Chuck, My Name Is Earl, Law & Order and Medium. NBC Entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman did confirm, however, that sadly Life is dead. The NBC execs also confirmed that SVU will be back, with or without Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay, which would be weird since they're sorta the heart and soul of that show. Also, no word on whether or not they'll chop The Biggest Loser in half (we hope so; it really doesn't need to be more than an hour) or how they are going to fit all of their new programs in with no 10 PM timeslots available thanks to Jay Leno.
The NBC upfronts were today, leading to some news, although not the news you may be looking for. Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. You might say it's been too quiet. You might want to hunker down for a couple of days until what's coming, comes. Circle the couch cushions. Turn on CNN. Make some chocolate milk. Run silent. Run deep. The day's news briefs are after the jump.
It's spring and upfronts are on the way, which means that it's time for the networks to decide which shows they want to keep and which get cut. Chuck falls into the "bubble" show category -- series that do passably well, but haven't gotten a pick-up for next year yet, meaning that the outlook is uncertain. Which is a shame, especially since it's NBC, a network that will have five less hours of primetime programming available next year (given that it decided to give Jay Leno that plum 10 PM spot), so finding space for its existing slate of shows, as well as new pilots in the works, is going to be difficult. We're concerned for Chuck's chances, but we've got all our fingers crossed, hoping that it will work out. Here's why.
It's pilot season, which means there's a lot of buzz about people we like getting cast in shows that may or may not ever make it to air. The studios are busy ordering pilots to see if they'll fly, and then selecting a rare few to actually make it to their lineups. But we're hopeful that a few of these shows get picked up, mostly because they feature some of our favorite stars, so they stand out from the sea of medical, legal and cop pilots out there. Here are the ones we'd most like to see hitting the airwaves next fall (or even winter).
