The MST3K crew will help you laugh through a slow week of TV on DVD releases.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVII
Return to the Satellite of Love for another round of poking fun at bad movies as Shout! releases their 27th installment of four-film MST3K collections. This particular set includes such cinematic pearls of badness as The Slime People, Rocket Attack U.S.A., Village of the Giants and The Deadly Mantis, all of which were lambasted during the show's earliest seasons.
Extras: Interviews with some of the "talent" affiliated with the spoofed movies, trailers and additional featurettes.
Dragons: Riders of Berk, Part 1 and Part 2
Seen the teaser for How to Train Your Dragon 2? Well, this Cartoon Network series serves as the bridge from the first movie to the new one, due out in theaters Summer 2014. Watch how Hiccup grows into the older dragon warrior glimpsed into the teaser and discovers those bad-ass moves that'll look so good on the big screen.
Extras: Various featurettes and coming attractions.
Super Friends: Season 5
Kids today get to grow up on the DC Animated Universe as conjured into being by Bruce Timm and Co. The previous generation of super-geeks wasn't quite as fortunate, as evidenced by this collection of 24 episodes from the 1980-1981 run of Super Friends. Not that there isn't nostalgic value to be had from watching these stiffly animated incarnations of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman et al., but compared to the lush visuals of Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League, this stuff more closely resembles caveman's drawings.
Extras: Bonus features are this set's Kryptonite.
Duck Dodgers: Deep Space Duck -- Season 2
Spun out of the Daffy Duck's famous sci-fi alter ego, this Cartoon Network series releases the second of its three-season run on DVD, including such episodes as the Porky Pig-centric "Pig Planet," a close encounter with an enemy calling himself "The Fudd" and a two-part season finale. As latter day Looney Tunes vehicles go, it ain't Tiny Toons, but it also isn't Loonatics Unleashed.
Extras: Zip.
