Bam! Biff! Pow! The animated Caped Crusader is on DVD.
Batman: The Brave & The Bold: The Complete First Season
The Simpsons: Season 16
With the Dark Knight's current cartoon series Beware the Batman currently on extended hiatus until 2014, now's a good time to revisit the series that preceded it -- the enjoyable team-up adventure serial, The Brave and the Bold, which partnered Gotham's champion with a host of DCU heroes, from Green Arrow to Plastic Man. Though perhaps not as grandly mythic as the classic Batman Animated Series, B&B does benefit from a light tone (which comes straight out of the comic industry's Silver Age, along with many of the character designs) and plenty of action. The grim and gritty Dark Knight is all well and good, but Bold reminded us how much fun the dashing Caped Crusader could be. The entire 24 season run of The Simpsons will move to FXX starting next August, but if you're still into physical media, Fox is dutifully releasing each season on DVD. Year 16 covers the batch of 21 episodes that aired between 2004-2005, including "Midnight RX," when Homer and his pops become prescription drug smugglers, "There's Something About Marrying," where gay marriage comes to Springfield (and Patty comes out of the closet!) and "The Heartbroke Kid," featuring the return of Albert Brooks, the guy who previously voiced one of the all-time great Simpsons one-shot characters, Hank Scorpio. Just as The Simpsons itself will probably never end, expect these DVD sets to keep coming long after the format has been replaced by all-streaming, all-the-time.
Extras: The Brave & the Bold is bare bones, but The Simpsons comes with commentary tracks on every episode, deleted scenes, and bonus installments.
Also on DVD:
A&E's hit "reality" sitcom Duck Dynasty: Seasons 1-3 Collector's Set is one of those phenomenons that nobody -- including the network -- ever saw coming. Add this series to your pop culture punch card now that the entire run is available in one handy box. (Duck-camo bandana included). TV Land's network-defining sitcom Hot in Cleveland: Season Four
puts another year of geriatric hijinks on disc. Extras include an honorary AARP membership card.
