Thank goodness for our returning shows, because otherwise this would have been a tough TV summer. While Teen Wolf, Suits, True Blood and Breaking Bad have all delivered week after week, most of the new programming of the last few months has left a lot to be desired. Breaking Pointe was fun and we're oddly obsessed with the surreal Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, but too many other freshman series were underwhelming at best. Here's what let us down the most:
The Olympics are almost over and we're a little let down and wondering what to do with all our spare time. So we'd like to propose these dream reality shows that would focus on some of the breakout stars of the London 2012 games, keeping the summer Olympic spirit alive for us during the long four-year wait for Rio.
We enjoy the guilty pleasure of Toddlers & Tiaras as much as anyone, but we're more than a little skeptical about the show's upcoming spinoff Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. While it was fun to see her talk about a dollar making her holler for a few minutes, it's not necessarily something we need to see on a weekly basis... or for a full hour. Even if she is picking up roadkill at the same time. We might be proven wrong, but judging by these recent reality TV spinoffs, we're guessing that won't be the case. Here are the worst stinkers:
The 2012 Summer Olympics finally kick off in London tonight with a massive opening ceremony, but the spectacle of the interpretive dancing and fireworks isn't the only part of this two-week sporting extravaganza that's worth watching. Even if you don't know Usain Bolt from Michael Phelps, here are plenty of reasons to tune in:
There were a lot of big surprises yesterday during the Emmy nominations, but most of them just served to make us angry. And while we've simmered down a bit, we're still very confused about the shows that the voters apparently watch. And we're pretty sure that sometimes they just see a recognizable film star's name, get excited and check their box, regardless of quality (that's the only way we can explain the love for Uma Thurman and Kathy Bates). Here are the snubs that we just can't believe:
This Sunday begins the first half of the final 16 episodes of AMC's Breaking Bad, a series we're only slightly obsessed with. Before we dive into eight new no-doubt mind-blowing episodes of one of the best shows on television, it's important to go into the season remembering that there's lots of ground to cover before Breaking Bad ends, not to mention the fact that Season 4's finale left us with a handful burning questions.
Another season of Big Brother is nearly upon us (it debuts next Thursday), and now that they've announced the new cast and this year's twist, we're starting to get excited ... and not just because The Bachelorette is boring us to tears this summer. We'll probably be disappointed by the 14th installment of BB about two weeks in, but for now, here's why there's still a glimmer of hope that this could be a good season.
We've started celebrating Independence Day a few days early, and we're especially happy because the past TV season allowed us to finally get away from some truly terrible characters. Thank goodness for deaths and cancellations. We'll light some sprinklers in these people's honor.
We had thought that we were going to spend our summer delighting in seeing Cat Deeley on a fresh program and watching Kelly Clarkson be her adorable self, but their respective new reality shows turned out to be duds. So instead we've turned our attention to some other series that may not generate quite as much buzz, but still fill our mindless summer reality needs (kinda like these shows from the dog days of winter). They all have a charm that Snooki and JWOWW's stale act severely lacks, and are a nice companion to keep us and our DVRs busy now that So You Think You Can Dance is only on one night a week.
Instead of honoring the great dads on TV (like the adorably weird Phil Dunphy or the sweet Danno) this Father's Day weekend, we decided to just be grateful that we aren't the offspring of this season's ten worst patriarchs. And believe it or not, only two guys from last time made this list, which means there were eight new terrible parents on TV in the past year.
