Knowing Matthew Weiner, we won't be seeing any more of the SCDP gang until sometime in the middle of 2013, if we're lucky -- if we're not, it might not be until 2014. Sure, that gives us time to process all of the jaw-dropping moments of Season 5, but there are also so many Mad Men idiosyncrasies we'll miss after the show ends its season this Sunday.
Summer used to be a time for ridiculous reality shows and reruns, but the season is now jam-packed with new and returning series, so much so that it's almost a challenge to keep up with the amount of shows premiering each week. We even had a tough time narrowing the list of shows we're anxiously awaiting down to these ten.
A ton of shows were cancelled this season, many of which deserved to go. But although we may not have shed tears over the programs themselves, there's quite a few specific elements that we're going to miss.
Based solely on the trailers and descriptions and scant amount of additional footage we saw during this week's network upfront presentations, here are the new shows that have piqued our interested for next season. Though since Ringer actually topped our list at this time last year, we're going to hold off planning our viewing schedules until we've had a chance to screen the full pilots.
In our now annual tradition, we're celebrating Mother's Day by calling out the very worst moms on TV this season. This year, we're particularly grateful that none of these women raised us. And the truly scary thing is that there's only two repeats from last year, and that's with leaving reality TV mothers off the list, which means there are some truly twisted matriarchs on the airwaves now.
More often than not, looking back at a TV season just reminds us of all of the ways we were let down, either by disappointing shows or by cancellations of series we enjoyed. But while the 2011-12 season has had its share of setbacks -- like Smash, which had a promising pilot and then immediately went into a downward spiral -- there have also been quite a few unexpected twists that made us happier than we ever imagined.
Mario Lopez recently spoiled that there was going to be an all-star season of Dancing With the Stars. We presume that means that Mr. Lopez will be among the returning competitors, though we can think of others we'd love to see again from the hundreds who have been on the show (some because of their talent, others for pure entertainment value). We're excluding previous winners (since they may have an unfair advantage), much as we'd enjoy watching Drew Lachey and J.R. Martinez again.
Hail to the Chief! Well, the Vice Chief at least. HBO's Veep kicks off this Sunday and we can't wait to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus ascend to the second highest office in the land, not just because this is Elaine Benes we're talking about, but also due to the fact that it's sadly still all too rare to see a female politician elected to televised office. As Veep's first season unspools, we fully expect Louis-Dreyfus's VP Selina Meyer to become one of our favorite TV politicians. In the meantime, here's are our current picks for the best political characters to hold elected office on TV. (That latter requirement is why you won't find our favorite Deputy Parks Director and current Pawnee city council candidate, Leslie Knope, on this list. If she beats Bobby Newport in the election, though, she'll instantly jump to the number one spot.)
The roommate dynamic has been one that has been mined for TV forever (just look at The Odd Couple and Laverne & Shirley), with Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 and Girls adding their own variations to the conceit this week. But which current sets of roomies are the most fun to watch?
The upcoming Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 is built upon the premise that people would deal with a crappy bitch of a roommate in order to live in a really great place. And you know what? We know the feeling. For the privilege of living in the following current and classic TV rental units, we'd pretty much cut off our right arms, or at least put up with someone who leaves wet towels all over the place or forgets to take out the trash.
